The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of Healthcare Workers
A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed an unprecedented burden on healthcare workers (HCWs) worldwide. This study aims to systematically review and meta-analyze the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of HCWs.
Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, and PsycINFO from January 2020 to December 2022. Studies reporting on the prevalence of anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout among HCWs during the pandemic were included.
Results: A total of 125 studies involving 150,000 HCWs were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence rates were 35% for anxiety, 30% for depression, 40% for stress, and 45% for burnout. Frontline workers showed significantly higher rates compared to non-frontline workers.
Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound negative impact on the mental health of HCWs. Urgent interventions are needed to support their psychological well-being and prevent long-term consequences.
