The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of Healthcare Workers
A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed unprecedented stress on healthcare systems worldwide. This study aims to systematically review and meta-analyze the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of healthcare workers (HCWs).
Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, and PsycINFO from January 2020 to December 2022. Studies reporting prevalence rates of anxiety, depression, burnout, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among HCWs were included.
Results: A total of 127 studies involving 158,432 participants were included in the final analysis. Pooled prevalence estimates were: anxiety (34.4%, 95% CI: 30.2–38.8), depression (31.8%, 95% CI: 27.9–35.9), burnout (45.2%, 95% CI: 40.1–50.4), and PTSD (22.1%, 95% CI: 18.5–26.1).
Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the mental health of healthcare workers globally. Urgent interventions are needed to support their psychological well-being during and after public health crises.
