The First Book of Samuel: A Commentary
by HANS W. HERTZBERG. Translated from the German by J. S. BOWDEN.
Pp. xiv + 282. Philadelphia: THE WESTMINSTER PRESS, 1964. $6.50.
This is a translation of the second edition (1963) of a commentary which first appeared in 1956 as part of the series Das Alte Testament Deutsch. The translator has added a bibliography of English works published since 1956 and has made some minor changes in the text to bring it up to date.
Hertzberg's approach to the books of Samuel is historical-critical. He believes that they are composed of several sources, which he attempts to identify and date. He also discusses the theological themes of the books, such as the nature of kingship and the role of prophecy.
The commentary is well-written and informative. It is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the study of the Old Testament.
