The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of Healthcare Workers
A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed unprecedented stress on healthcare systems worldwide. This study aims to systematically review and meta-analyze the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of healthcare workers (HCWs).
Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science from January 2020 to December 2022. Studies reporting prevalence rates of anxiety, depression, burnout, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among HCWs were included.
Results: A total of 125 studies involving over 150,000 participants were included in the final analysis. Pooled prevalence estimates were: anxiety (34.5%), depression (28.7%), burnout (45.2%), and PTSD (22.1%). Frontline workers showed significantly higher rates compared to non-frontline staff.
Conclusion: The mental health burden on HCWs during the pandemic is substantial. Urgent interventions are needed to support their psychological well-being and ensure sustainable healthcare delivery.
