The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of Healthcare Workers
A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed unprecedented stress on healthcare systems worldwide. This study aims to systematically review and meta-analyze the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of healthcare workers (HCWs).
Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, and PsycINFO from January 2020 to December 2022. Studies reporting prevalence rates of anxiety, depression, and burnout among HCWs were included.
Results: A total of 125 studies involving 150,000 participants were included in the final analysis. The pooled prevalence of anxiety was 35% (95% CI: 30-40%), depression was 30% (95% CI: 25-35%), and burnout was 45% (95% CI: 40-50%).
Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the mental health of healthcare workers globally. Urgent interventions are needed to support their psychological well-being during and after public health crises.
