The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of Healthcare Workers
A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed an unprecedented burden on healthcare systems worldwide. This study aims to systematically review and meta-analyze the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of healthcare workers.
Methods: We conducted a systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and PsycINFO databases for studies published between January 2020 and December 2022. Studies reporting on anxiety, depression, burnout, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among healthcare workers were included.
Results: A total of 125 studies involving 150,000 participants were included in the analysis. The pooled prevalence rates were 35% for anxiety, 30% for depression, 45% for burnout, and 25% for PTSD. Frontline workers showed significantly higher rates compared to non-frontline staff.
Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound negative impact on the mental health of healthcare workers. Urgent interventions are needed to support their psychological well-being during and after public health crises.
