The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of Healthcare Workers
A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed unprecedented stress on healthcare systems worldwide. This study aims to systematically review and meta-analyze the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of healthcare workers (HCWs). Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, and PsycINFO from January 2020 to December 2022. Studies reporting on anxiety, depression, burnout, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among HCWs were included. Random-effects models were used to pool prevalence estimates. Results: A total of 127 studies involving 158,432 participants were included. The pooled prevalence of anxiety was 34.4% (95% CI: 30.2–38.8), depression was 31.8% (95% CI: 27.5–36.3), burnout was 45.2% (95% CI: 39.8–50.7), and PTSD was 22.1% (95% CI: 18.5–26.1). Frontline workers, nurses, and those with direct patient contact reported significantly higher rates of psychological distress. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound negative impact on the mental health of HCWs globally. Urgent interventions are needed to support their well-being.
