The Sumerian disputation poems are a unique genre of Sumerian literature that flourished during the Old Babylonian period (ca. 2000–1600 BCE). These poems typically feature two characters, often animals or natural elements, who engage in a verbal contest or debate. The purpose of these debates is not necessarily to determine a winner, but rather to showcase the rhetorical skills of the participants and to explore various themes and ideas relevant to Sumerian society and culture.
The Bird and Fish is one of the most well-known and widely studied of the Sumerian disputation poems. It features a debate between a bird and a fish, each arguing for the superiority of their own way of life. The poem is notable for its vivid imagery, its use of metaphor and simile, and its exploration of themes such as nature, freedom, and the human condition.

The study of Sumerian literature is an important field of research that provides valuable insights into the history, culture, and society of ancient Mesopotamia. The Sumerian disputation poems, in particular, offer a unique window into the intellectual and cultural life of the Sumerians, and their study continues to be an active area of research among scholars of ancient Near Eastern studies.
