The First Book of Samuel
A Commentary
by HANS W. HERTZBERG. Translated from the second German edition by A. S. TODD.
Philadelphia: The Westminster Press, 1964. Pp. xvi + 256. $6.50.
This is a translation of the second edition of Hertzberg's commentary on I Samuel which appeared in the series Das Alte Testament Deutsch (ATD) in 1960. It is a welcome addition to the Old Testament Library series and will be useful to students who do not read German.
Hertzberg has written an excellent commentary. He is well acquainted with the literature and his own comments are always pertinent and helpful. His treatment of the text is conservative but he does not hesitate to suggest emendations when they seem necessary. He is particularly good in his discussion of the historical background of the book and in his analysis of the literary structure of the narrative.
The translation is generally accurate and readable. There are a few places where it could be improved, but these are minor points. The notes are adequate and helpful. The bibliography is up-to-date and comprehensive.
This commentary is a valuable addition to the Old Testament Library series and will be welcomed by students and scholars alike.
