This is a translation of the second edition of Hertzberg's commentary on I Samuel which appeared in 1960 as part of the series Das Alte Testament Deutsch (ATD). It is a welcome addition to English language commentaries on this book and will be useful to students who do not read German. The translator has done an excellent job of rendering Hertzberg's thought into clear and readable English.
Hertzberg's approach to the text is historical-critical. He seeks to understand the text in its historical context and to trace the development of the traditions which lie behind it. He is particularly interested in the relationship between the text and the history of Israel. He argues that the text of I Samuel reflects a complex process of tradition formation and that it cannot be understood simply as a historical record.
One of the strengths of Hertzberg's commentary is his attention to the literary structure of the text. He shows how the various stories and traditions are woven together to form a coherent whole. He also pays close attention to the theological themes of the text, particularly the theme of kingship and the role of the prophet.
Hertzberg's commentary is not without its weaknesses. Some of his historical reconstructions are speculative and not all scholars will agree with his interpretations. However, his commentary is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to understand the book of I Samuel in its historical and literary context.
