Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant psychological distress among healthcare workers worldwide. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of mental health problems among Chinese healthcare workers during the early stages of the outbreak.
Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted from February 1 to March 15, 2020. Participants included doctors, nurses, and other medical staff from various hospitals across China. Standardized questionnaires were used to assess symptoms of anxiety, depression, insomnia, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Results: A total of 1,257 valid responses were received. The overall prevalence rates were as follows: anxiety (44.6%), depression (50.4%), insomnia (34.0%), and PTSD (27.4%). Frontline workers, those with direct contact with confirmed cases, and individuals working longer hours reported significantly higher levels of psychological distress compared to their counterparts.
Conclusions: The mental health of healthcare workers in China was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Urgent interventions are needed to provide psychological support and reduce work-related stressors for this vulnerable population.
