The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of Healthcare Workers
A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed unprecedented stress on healthcare systems worldwide. This study aims to systematically review and meta-analyze the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of healthcare workers (HCWs).
Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science from January 2020 to December 2023. Studies reporting prevalence rates of anxiety, depression, burnout, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among HCWs were included. Random-effects models were used to pool prevalence estimates.
Results: A total of 127 studies involving 285,432 participants were included. The pooled prevalence rates were: anxiety (34.4%, 95% CI: 30.2–38.8%), depression (31.8%, 95% CI: 27.5–36.3%), burnout (45.2%, 95% CI: 40.1–50.4%), and PTSD (22.6%, 95% CI: 18.9–26.7%). Frontline workers showed significantly higher rates compared to non-frontline staff.
