Abstract
Background:
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused significant psychological distress among healthcare workers worldwide. However, the prevalence and severity of mental health problems among Chinese healthcare workers during the pandemic remain unclear.
Methods:
We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies published between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2020, that reported on the mental health of healthcare workers in China during the COVID-19 pandemic. We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI, Wanfang, and VIP databases. Two reviewers independently screened titles and abstracts, assessed full-text articles for eligibility, and extracted data. We used random-effects models to pool prevalence estimates.
Results:
A total of 45 studies involving 38,721 healthcare workers were included. The pooled prevalence of anxiety was 26.0% (95% CI, 22.0%-30.0%), depression was 24.0% (95% CI, 20.0%-28.0%), insomnia was 34.0% (95% CI, 29.0%-39.0%), and post-traumatic stress disorder was 18.0% (95% CI, 14.0%-22.0%). Female gender, frontline work, and lack of social support were associated with higher risk of mental health problems.
Conclusions:
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a substantial negative impact on the mental health of healthcare workers in China. Urgent interventions are needed to address these issues and protect the well-being of this critical workforce.
