This is a welcome addition to the series of critical editions of the Peshitta Old Testament published under the auspices of the International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament. The text is based on that of Leiden University Library MS Or. 14-15, which dates from the ninth century A.D., and is considered to be one of the best witnesses to the original Peshitta text. The editor has collated this manuscript with a number of other important manuscripts, including the famous Codex Ambrosianus (Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana B. 21 Inf.), and has provided a full critical apparatus. The introduction provides a detailed discussion of the textual history of the Peshitta, the relationship between the Peshitta and the Hebrew Masoretic Text, and the translation technique of the Peshitta translator(s). The notes are extensive and provide valuable insights into the interpretation of the text. This edition will be an invaluable resource for scholars working on the Old Testament, the Peshitta, and the history of biblical translation.
The book is well-produced, with clear type and a handsome layout. The price is reasonable for a scholarly work of this kind. It is highly recommended for all libraries with holdings in biblical studies or Semitic languages.
