The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of Healthcare Workers
A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed an unprecedented burden on healthcare systems worldwide. Healthcare workers (HCWs) have been at the forefront of this crisis, facing significant challenges that have impacted their mental health.
Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to synthesize the existing literature on the prevalence of anxiety, depression, and burnout among HCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic and identify associated risk factors.
Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science from January 2020 to December 2022. Studies reporting on the prevalence of anxiety, depression, or burnout in HCWs were included. Data were extracted and pooled using random-effects models.
Results: A total of 125 studies involving over 150,000 participants were included. The pooled prevalence rates were 34% for anxiety, 31% for depression, and 45% for burnout. Key risk factors identified included direct patient contact, lack of personal protective equipment (PPE), and inadequate social support.
Conclusion: The mental health of HCWs has been severely compromised during the pandemic. Urgent interventions are needed to provide psychological support, ensure adequate resources, and mitigate the long-term consequences of this crisis on the healthcare workforce.
