The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of Healthcare Workers
A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed unprecedented stress on healthcare systems worldwide. This study aims to systematically review and meta-analyze the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of healthcare workers (HCWs).
Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, and PsycINFO from December 2019 to June 2023. Studies reporting prevalence rates of anxiety, depression, and burnout among HCWs were included.
Results: A total of 125 studies involving over 150,000 participants were analyzed. Pooled prevalence estimates indicated high levels of psychological distress: anxiety (34.4%), depression (31.8%), and burnout (42.1%).
Conclusion: The findings highlight a significant deterioration in the mental well-being of HCWs during the pandemic. Urgent interventions are needed to support this critical workforce.
