Abstract
Background:
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant psychological distress among healthcare workers worldwide. In China, where the outbreak originated, frontline medical staff faced unprecedented challenges.
Methods:
A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 1,257 healthcare workers from 34 hospitals across China between February and March 2020. Participants completed standardized questionnaires assessing anxiety, depression, and stress levels.
Results:
Overall, 46.2% of participants reported symptoms of anxiety, 44.6% reported depression, and 73.4% experienced high levels of stress. Nurses and those working directly with confirmed cases showed significantly higher rates of psychological distress compared to other groups.
Conclusions:
The mental health of healthcare workers in China was severely impacted during the early stages of the pandemic. Immediate psychological support interventions are crucial for protecting this vulnerable population.
