The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of Healthcare Workers
A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed unprecedented stress on healthcare systems worldwide. This study aims to systematically review and meta-analyze the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of healthcare workers.
Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO) from January 2020 to December 2022. Studies reporting prevalence rates of anxiety, depression, or burnout among healthcare workers during the pandemic were included.
Results: A total of 127 studies involving 158,432 participants were included. The pooled prevalence of anxiety was 34.4% (95% CI: 30.2–38.8), depression was 31.8% (95% CI: 27.5–36.3), and burnout was 45.2% (95% CI: 40.1–50.4).
Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the mental health of healthcare workers globally. Urgent interventions are needed to support their psychological well-being.
