The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of Healthcare Workers
A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed an unprecedented burden on healthcare systems worldwide. Healthcare workers (HCWs) have been at the forefront of this crisis, facing significant physical and psychological challenges.
Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to synthesize existing evidence on the prevalence and severity of mental health issues among HCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science from January 2020 to December 2022. Studies reporting on anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in HCWs were included.
Results: A total of 127 studies involving over 150,000 participants were included in the analysis. Pooled estimates indicated high rates of anxiety (34.4%), depression (31.8%), and stress (45.0%) among HCWs. Frontline workers, nurses, and those with direct patient contact reported significantly higher levels of distress.
Conclusion: The mental health of healthcare workers has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Urgent interventions are needed to support their well-being and ensure the sustainability of healthcare systems.
