The Origin of the Name 'Canaan'

In a recent article in this Journal (vol. 51, pp. 1-14) I have shown that the name Canaan is derived from a root meaning 'to be low, humble, submissive,' and that it was originally applied to the coast-land of Syria-Palestine by the Egyptians.
It has been suggested by Professor Torrey that the name may have been given by the Amorites, who were the dominant people in Palestine before the coming of the Hebrews. This theory is not supported by any evidence, and it is difficult to see how the Amorites could have given a name to a land which they did not occupy.
Another theory is that the name was given by the Phoenicians, who were the first people to establish colonies on the coast of Palestine. This theory is also not supported by any evidence, and it is difficult to see how the Phoenicians could have given a name to a land which they did not occupy.
A third theory is that the name was given by the Egyptians, who were the first people to establish a presence in Palestine. This theory is supported by some evidence, but it is not conclusive.
In conclusion, it is clear that the origin of the name Canaan is still a matter of debate among scholars. Further research is needed to determine the true origin of the name.
