The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of Healthcare Workers
A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed an unprecedented burden on healthcare workers (HCWs) worldwide. This study aims to systematically review and meta-analyze the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of HCWs.
Methods: We conducted a systematic search of PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science from January 2020 to December 2022. Studies reporting on the prevalence of anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among HCWs during the pandemic were included. Random-effects models were used to pool prevalence estimates.
Results: A total of 125 studies involving 150,000 HCWs were included. The pooled prevalence rates were: anxiety (34.5%, 95% CI: 30.2-38.9%), depression (31.8%, 95% CI: 27.5-36.2%), stress (45.2%, 95% CI: 40.1-50.4%), burnout (40.1%, 95% CI: 35.0-45.3%), and PTSD (22.3%, 95% CI: 18.0-26.7%). Nurses and frontline workers reported significantly higher rates of mental health issues compared to other HCWs and non-frontline staff.
Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound negative impact on the mental health of HCWs. Urgent interventions are needed to support their psychological well-being.
Introduction
The emergence of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in late 2019 rapidly evolved into a global pandemic, posing severe challenges to public health systems and economies worldwide. Healthcare workers (HCWs), being at the forefront of the response, have faced immense physical and psychological pressures.
Exposure to high-risk environments, long working hours, fear of infection, separation from family, and witnessing patient suffering and death have contributed to a significant deterioration in the mental health of this critical workforce. Understanding the extent and nature of these impacts is crucial for developing effective support strategies.
