The 'aqīqa is a sacrifice offered on behalf of a newborn child. It has been widely practiced by Muslims since early times, and continues to be so today. Yet it has never received much attention from scholars of Islam. This article attempts to fill that gap, by examining the origins and development of the 'aqīqa in Islamic law.
