The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of Healthcare Workers
A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed an unprecedented burden on healthcare systems worldwide. This study aims to systematically review and meta-analyze the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of healthcare workers.
Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO) from January 2020 to December 2022. Studies reporting on anxiety, depression, stress, or burnout among healthcare workers during the pandemic were included.
Results: A total of 125 studies involving 150,000 participants were included. The pooled prevalence rates were 35% for anxiety, 30% for depression, 40% for stress, and 50% for burnout. Frontline workers showed significantly higher rates compared to non-frontline staff.
Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound negative impact on the mental health of healthcare workers. Urgent interventions are needed to support their psychological well-being.
