The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of Healthcare Workers
A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed an unprecedented burden on healthcare systems worldwide. This study aims to systematically review and meta-analyze the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of healthcare workers (HCWs).
Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, and PsycINFO for studies published between January 2020 and December 2022. Studies reporting on anxiety, depression, stress, or burnout among HCWs were included.
Results: A total of 125 studies involving over 150,000 participants were included in the final analysis. The pooled prevalence rates were found to be 34% for anxiety, 31% for depression, and 45% for high levels of stress.
Conclusion: The findings highlight the severe psychological toll of the pandemic on HCWs. Urgent interventions are needed to support their mental well-being and ensure the sustainability of healthcare services.
