This commentary is a translation of the second edition of Hans Walter Hertzberg's Die Bücher Josua, Richter, Ruth, published in 1953 as volume 9 of Das Alte Testament Deutsch. The translator has added a bibliography of English works and has made some minor changes in the text to bring it up to date.
Hertzberg's commentary on I Samuel is characterized by its clarity and conciseness. He deals with the difficult problems of the text and interpretation in a straightforward manner, without getting bogged down in excessive detail. His treatment of the historical background is particularly good, and he makes good use of archaeological evidence.
One of the strengths of this commentary is its attention to the literary structure of the book. Hertzberg shows how the various stories and episodes are woven together to form a coherent whole. He also pays close attention to the theological themes of the book, such as the nature of kingship and the role of prophecy.
Overall, this is an excellent commentary that will be of great value to students and scholars alike. It is clearly written, well-organized, and full of insightful observations. Highly recommended.
