The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of Healthcare Workers
A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed an unprecedented burden on healthcare systems worldwide. This study aims to systematically review and meta-analyze the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of healthcare workers (HCWs).
Methods: We conducted a systematic search of PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science from December 2019 to June 2021. Studies reporting on anxiety, depression, stress, or burnout among HCWs during the pandemic were included. Random-effects models were used for meta-analysis.
Results: A total of 87 studies involving 124,567 participants were included. The pooled prevalence rates were 34.4% for anxiety, 31.8% for depression, 45.0% for stress, and 54.2% for burnout. Frontline workers showed significantly higher rates compared to non-frontline staff.
Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound negative impact on the mental health of HCWs globally. Urgent interventions are needed to support their psychological well-being and ensure the sustainability of healthcare services.
