The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of Healthcare Workers
A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed unprecedented stress on healthcare systems worldwide. This study aims to systematically review and meta-analyze the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of healthcare workers (HCWs).
Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, and PsycINFO from January 2020 to December 2022. Studies reporting on anxiety, depression, burnout, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among HCWs were included.
Results: A total of 125 studies involving over 150,000 participants were included in the analysis. The pooled prevalence rates were 34% for anxiety, 31% for depression, 45% for burnout, and 22% for PTSD. Frontline workers showed significantly higher rates compared to non-frontline staff.
